What is GroningerArchiefNet

A lot of people do not know how to find various archives, or what information is held in those archives. The GroningerArchiefNet aims to help these people by presenting information about archives in Groningen in a simple form on the Internet. We hope that this website will show you the way round the archives in Groningen and stimulate you to visit them.

What information can be found on the GroningerArchiefNet

The website shows in a clear way where and when archives in Groningen can be consulted. The website aims to give the titles (titels) and inventories (inventarissen) of all archives.

An inventory will show you which archives you will be able to see or ask questions about. To actually see the archives and consult original archive documents you will still have to visit the organisation where they are kept. This is why the site also gives you addresses (adressen), names of people to contact (contactpersonen) and times of opening and closure (openingstijden) of the various organisations. When visiting our site, you may find that not all the inventories have been entered yet. The site will also give you information on actual developments (see under the button Nieuws), and about the history of the organisation you are visiting (see under the button Geschiedenis). Unfortunately, both Nieuws and Geschiedenis have not been translated yet into English. Finally, the site will offer you more information by visiting our links (see under the button Links).

What does the world of archives in the province of Groningen look like

In the province of Groningen archives are stored at the Groninger Archieven, the province of Groningen, municipalities, Water Boards, documentationcentres and museums, like the open-air museum (Openluchtmuseum het Hoogeland) in Warffum, the museum which tells the story of the Groninger peatdistrict (Veenkoloniaal Museum) in Veendam and the regional museum (Streekhistorisch Centrum) in Stadskanaal.

In 1990 the municipalities in Groningen were regrouped: their number dropped from 50 to 25. A number of municipalities were joined together. Example: the archives of the former municipality Eenrum which you will nowadays find at De Marne.

You can also get to the 2 Water Boards -Hunze en Aa's in Veendam and Noorderzijlvest in Groningen- to consult their archives. There used to be many more WaterAuthorities in Groningen, but through the years many were joined together or closed down.

The archives of the Provincial Authorities of 20 years and older are stored at the Groninger Archieven, where you can study them.

You can visit the municipalities and Water Boards in person during business hours, but you have to make an appointment by phone beforehand.

They usually have a reading room where you can consult original documents.
